The 2005 USIACs were hosted by Dr. Pat Madison and the Georgia College and State University Archery Club. The tournament was professionally run; the judging and organization was excellent.

Tournament Overview and Awards

The collegiate archers broke the attendance record again this year at the 2005 United States Intercollegiate Championships. A total of 183 registered; with the men’s recurve division the largest, followed by men’s compound division.

On Thursday, official practice, the weather was hot and muggy as expected. The archers made the most of their practice time … warming up, sighting in, catching up with friends, making new ones, and trying to stay cool.

Friday was a different story. Storm clouds lurked all morning, playing with the light conditions, and the winds were gusting and changing directions. The archers had to work to keep their arrows in the yellow. The afternoon brought high winds that tossed the shades around. Some of the archers’ shades were tossed over a four foot fence! This happened shortly following the start of the lunch break. The Stanford team had already left the field when some of their quivers with arrows that were hung from the shade took flight over the fence and some twenty feet beyond it, crashing into another fence. Fortunately, the UCLA team was still there and rescued their equipment. A torrential downpour lasted several hours and the modified team round was cancelled.

Saturday, the wind continued to be difficult to deal with, but with closer distances, the impact was much less. It was warmer, but without the majority of the archer’s tents it was going to be uncomfortable. Fortunately, the organizers and several coaches and parents donated personal shades for their use. The official team round was held in the afternoon, which was fun for all involved.

Sunday gave us some more “Georgia weather”; hot and humid. Winds continued as they had all week and many archers displayed their mastery of them. As the fields narrowed, the intensity increased and teams gathered round to support their team mates that remained in the game. For the several finalists without teams, the encouragement and friendship of other teams were appreciated. Dine’ College, always the sportsmen, supported one of their friends, as did the Stanford team.

The friendship and sportsmanship displayed by this great group of collegiate archers topped the tournament. It is no small feat to go through the anxiety and intensity of a tournament where a world university team was at stake, as well as the USIAC championship, Collegiate Team Championship, and All-American team. Yet, archers from all levels and all backgrounds had a great time.
