Tournament Overview and Awards

The 2005 Western Regional tournament was held in Long Beach, CA at the El Dorado field in late April. Wind, rain, and cold did not hamper the fun and competition. Though Mel Leach accused the one and only Utah archer of, ‘bringing this weather’, it was only done because we have to shoot in the same environment that we practice in. Otherwise, we would’ve called for hot and sunny.

Team attendance was represented by 11 schools, though there were a few ‘lone archers’ who quickly made friends within the larger groups. The spirit of friendliness by the archers was one of the finer points of the competition. The days were long, with some delays, but overall the tournament was run very well.

Introduction of the ‘skipping rule’ at the 30meter distance kept morale high and focused archers on the X. The ‘skipping rule’ should receive consideration to FITA rules as it enhances the speed of completing the round, among other things. Skipping rule, you ask?? Early in the last round, Dine’ College stated that if you didn’t shoot an X, you had to skip back from the target. The intentness on getting X’s, not just 10’s increased 10 fold, especially with one archer who is ‘skipping impaired’ having failed skipping lessons early in life. Soon after the rule was implemented, there became long lines of skipping archers returning from the targets. Laughter abounded.

The awards ceremony was held late in the day on Sunday after the elimination round.
